Institute for Central Asian Studies (ICAS) of Lanzhou University was one of the first few Central Asian research institutes initiated when it was founded in China in March 1994. Devoting our efforts in further advance the friendly relations and maintain regional security between China and Central Asian countries, we have combined academic research with policy consulting. Research topics carried out at ICAS range from Central Asia, anti-secession, to anti-terrorism, which have yielded substantial achievements since its establishment. ICAS also brings valuable perspectives for government decision making, which have been favorably reviewed by several Ministries and Commissions and gained good reputation. Professor Yang Shu was awarded the Medal of the“10th Anniversary of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization” by the Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2012.
The Ministry of Education approved the Institute for Central Asian Studies as a Regions and Countries Studies Research Base in 2011 and an Afghan Research Center in 2017. In recent years, ICAS has made marked progress in Think-tank construction and has been the member of:
The “One Belt and One Road” Think-tank Alliance (2015);
The Xinjiang Think-tank Council (2015);
The BRICS Think-tank Council in China (2017);
Sino-Russian Strategic Corporation Think-tank (2017);
